CHAPTER 18

YOU'RE A BIG GIRL NOW

Thursday morning found Janice, Charmaine, Yvonne, Sam and Gabriella sitting in the free clinic located on the corners of Desire Street and Florida Avenue in the Ninth Ward awaiting the results from Gabriella's pregnancy test, which had been administered a couple of days earlier.

Gabriella was nervous and frightened. She knew Henrietta would be so disappointed in her, and she was also worried if she and Sam would be able to take care of a baby, and even more, she was wondering if Sam would even stick around if he learned she was pregnant. Gabriella feared that if her test came back positive, she would lose Sam forever. The doctor who'd administered Gabriella's test came into view from the hall leading to the labs and the five friends stood up. The doctor escorted Gabriella to his office and turned around and was startled to see the entire group in his office. He confirmed what Janice had already suspected: Gabriella was indeed pregnant.

Gabriella raised her hands to her face and leaned over into Sam's chest and wept lowly. Charmaine rubbed her back softly and Sam assured her that everything was going to be okay.

“She's in the early stages of her pregnancy.” the doctor remarked. “There's still plenty of time for an abortion.”

Gabriella raised her head from Sam's chest and told the doctor plainly that she wasn't having an abortion.

“Ma'am, I know you are scared right now, but raising a baby on your own is tough now-a-days and—”

“She's not alone. The baby's father is right here, man. You think I actually wanna kill my child?” Sam replied angrily. “You think I'm a run out on Gabriella? I love my woman and I'll do whatever it takes to raise my child. Fuck an abortion!”

“There's no need for vulgarity sir. I'm sorry, Gabriella, I'm sorry to all of you. I didn't see a ring on Gabriella's finger, so I assumed the baby's father wasn't in the picture.” the doctor replied in an apologetic tone.

“She's only sixteen, doctor. Both of them are sixteen,” Yvonne remarked.

The doctor looked at Sam and then back at Gabriella and apologized again. He looked at Sam's muscular physique and Gabriella's well proportioned frame and had assumed the two were older than they were. He complemented Gabriella and Sam on their maturity and wished them the best of luck before giving Gabriella a prescription for prenatal vitamins.

The friends left the free clinic and began discussing ways to tell Henrietta that Gabriella was pregnant as they walked her home. Gabriella also had to sing at Persia's later on in the night so getting out of the house would pose yet another problem.

Gabriella, Sam, and Janice were sitting on the couch when Henrietta came home from work at about 6:30 P.M. She bounced through the door in a cheery mood. She had received her paycheck and had gotten an extensive raise this school year. Henrietta shared the news with the three and they congratulated her as she walked into the kitchen and began to prepare dinner.
